Course details

The day will be led by Lindsey Brown a very experienced achievement tutor who will guide delegates through the skills required when designing, coordinating and delivering skills to assist students produce competitive university applications. She will share best practice and deliver a range of activities designed to help learners from a wide range of backgrounds with their application for medical school. Lindsey developed a comprehensive programme for medical students which was highlighted in Ofsted’s good practice survey for science.

recognising how medical schools differ from each other

Understanding the jargon

utilising strategies to choose a medical school

Advising learners who don’t meet the entry criteria: widening participation schemes, alternative routes in and redirecting students.

11.00am  Morning coffee

11.15am  Making sense of the application process: what medical schools are looking for in a candidate.

Exploring the application process and how it differs

demystifying the entry requirements

identifying the key skills, traits and knowledge that candidates need

understanding the requirements for volunteering/work experience

an introduction to the UKAT & BMAT: what are they, when are they and what are they looking for?

exploring medical interviews

writing effective medical refernces

2.15pm. Creating a support programme: strategies, techniques and resources

implementing strategies to inspire, support and develop skills

developing advice, guidance and initiatives to support work experience/ volunteering

utilising resources to encourage knowledge acquisition

implementing techniques to support UCAS applications

building insight: develop knowledge for the future
